About WYSO

From its beginnings in 2003, the purpose of West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra has been to perform classical music to a high standard and bring this to a wider community who would not normally consider attending a classical concert. It has subsequently grown to a full sized symphony orchestra performing a range of classical works.

The orchestra is always keen to collaborate with other groups and participate in concerts which promote classical music outside its usual audience.

  • We have worked with groups such as Help the Aged to allow their members to come to classical concert.
  • We perform concerts for children.
  • We have played outdoor concerts including one on the beach in Scarborough with the band Electric Eel Shock.
  • We played in Leeds Kirkgate Market as part of a week of events there
  • We played in Bramley Baths (yes – in) as part of I Love West Leeds Festival.
  • We have played at the annual Proms in the Castle - to picknicking audiences of over a thousand people - at Pontefract Castle for the last four years.

The orchestra has a strong community ethos. We are especially keen to make music available to children, ethnic minorities, older people and people with low incomes. We hope to inspire anyone to enjoy and participate in music making and to provide an opportunity for smaller groups to perform with or alongside us.

We are always pleased to hear from any group who is either interested in collaborating with us or attending one of our concerts.
